Readjustment may be required if the target or the actual distance between two components inside precision machinery changes. The drawback of using traditional shims that are mechanically inserted is that they must be machined precisely to the desired dimension. Furthermore, once a measurement has been fixed, it is frequently quite difficult to change it later. Additionally, endless fine adjustment is not always attainable. PI has created the ideal remedy for this problem in the form of piezo-based "shims" called PI Rest. The active shims, after they have been incorporated into the machine, not only allow for the readjustment of the space between two components at any time, but also do so with nanometer-level accuracy.
